NO ESCAPE
Neither the swimming sea nor the waving waves could tell
Of their alliance with the dispensation of a spell
On the vessel of innocent voyagers; princes and peasants
Over the insubordination of a rebellious servant
Neither the hungered hunger nor the satisfied satisfaction
Of the whale could ascertain its active contribution
To the tale of the transit of a defiant messenger
To an undesired destination, the will of his sender
And though the stubbornness of the stubborn resisted submission
Yet did the willingness of the willing bring him to subjection
And the loyalty of the loyal dismantled his pride
Because the Master's pleasure must not be denied
He gives grace to the humble and resists the proud
What grace showed He to the sinful city crying out
In ashes and sack-clothes and fastings and repentance
And what derogation betided the self-centred servant
Oh for grace never to contend divine mandate
For even in unwillingness there is never an escape
For all things are and were made for his pleasure
Both I and my will and every dream I treasure
